Little Things Mean a Lot, October 26, 2015

“Little things Mean a Lot” or so the song goes. And from the beginning of time it was often the little things that improved our lives and even changed the course of history. For example, the safety pin, the stirrup, the dinner fork and the Robertson screwdriver all have their place in the hall of honour. This course will look at the origin and development of a wide variety of “little things” that have shaped and altered us over the millennia.

Partners in Learning presents “A Grand Illumination” Awards

This Christmas, a Grand Bend committee has initiated a series of efforts to encourage Grand Bend to “Light Up”. Also this year, Partners in Learning is honouring the season by providing judges and prizes for the most beautiful, imaginative, and spirited outdoor lighting. On Wednesday, December 17, the Partners Executive presented the winners of the Grand Illumination Contest. They are as follows:

  • For the Best of Business lighting, Robin and Richard Cooke’s AKsence on Main Street wins first prize for its colourful storefront. There were countless runners up.
  • timberwood trail winner lauren

    Lauren presents to Gary Harbin

For providing a display of lighting and sound to appeal to everyone, but perhaps most of all to children, the Children’s Choice Award goes to Gary Harbin at 8812 Timberwood Trail.

  • For Elegant Design, the committee of judges were tied, and so we have co-winners of this award. They are Mark Relouw residence at 9923 Parkview in Vandongen, and the
    WEE LAKE

    Gary Eisler residence, Wee Lake

Gary Eisler residence at 10135 Jennison Crescent, Wee Lake. These houses represent what magic can be created by simple white incandescent lighting as well as by the dancing lights of LED technology.

  • In recognition of the great losses in trees and landscaping borne by so many, this year’s Spirit of Christmas Award goes to The Charlie Brown tree of Huron Woods, owned and cherished by Jacqui Krech at 9933 Pinetree Court .
  • Because of the very high degree of participation and clear enthusiasm for the project, Merrywood Meadows wins the prize for Dazzling Neighbourhood Award. The award is accepted by Joan and Bill Hoffman, whose house at 10200 Pineview Crescent, Merrywood, was on almost every judge’s short list.

Partners in Learning congratulates everyone who brought a wintertime sparkle to Grand Bend. Please go out and witness Grand Bend alight. Please admire the symphony of colour at the Crawford’s famous Wee Lake residence.  On your way by, salute the Greens’ stalwart tree trunks in Merrywood. Find a friend to let you into the Cove and slowly drive its brilliant streets. Grand Bend is ablaze with Christmas spirit.

Webmaster Note: A special thanks to Nancy Winters for leading the PIL executive through this process.

Making Sense of Our Existence, January 12, 2015

From times immemorial humanity has been trying to make sense of its existence. Everyday crises have confronted humanity with some nagging questions, questions that are eternal in nature, and that just won’t go away. As humanity continues to generate answers to these questions, and then gathers the answers together, worldviews began to emerge. Some are religious, others are secular. This course will examine a variety of worldviews that humanity has developed to answer life’s eternal questions.

Down to the Sea in Ships, February 16, 2015

Doesn’t this phrase conjure up thoughts of discovery, adventure, danger and challenge? For longer than recorded history humans have built things that float and left the land behind to seek new resources, escape danger, fight wars or learn about the world. In more modern times, commerce and the profit motive kicked in and today it is also done for pure sport and pleasure. In this course we will explore what compels us to take great risks, what the consequence of these endeavors have been and how the technology of ocean travel has changed.

James Bond is perhaps the most successful movie franchise in history. Audiences never tire of the intrigue and secrecy that are the hallmarks of spies and espionage. While fictional stories entertain us, there is a historical reality that keeps the genre alive. This course will examine spies and espionage through the ages, from ancient Rome to the present day.

The War to End All Wars, Sep. 15, 2014

World War I: The War to End All Wars

World War I which began 100 years ago was the greatest single event of the 20th Century. By the time it was over, 11 million persons were dead, 22 million were wounded, and countless numbers of men, women and children carried the scars of the war for decades to come. This course will examine why the War occurred when so many felt its outbreak was impossible. Particular attention will be given to the famous battles, trench warfare, the role of women and children, the home front, propaganda, wartime entertainment, war in the air and at sea, and the returning veterans. Because of the ferocity,World War I became known as “the war to end all wars”, but unfortunately it failed to live up to its expectations.
