Ever since the Ayatollah Khomeini returned to Iran in 1979 reports about Islam have often dominated the news. More recently the television broadcasts have taken on a gruesome tone. Contradictory media reports about Muslims at war and Islamic atrocities have preoccupied Western journalists. Controversial claims about the nature of Islam constantly confuse the public and raise many concerns. Understanding Islam will explore the origin and development of Islam, as well as its achievements during the Golden Age. Particular attention will be given to the issues that cause friction between the Islamic world and the West.
