Realizing Reconciliation, Jan. 14 to Feb. 11
Registration Fee: $25
Time: 5 weeks from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm starting Jan. 14
Location: Huron Shores United Church, 25 Main St., Grand Bend
Notes: This is a course that no one will want to miss! This a special course offering from Partners. No preparation required.
There is a deep hope for Canada that there can be reconciliation. We would like to believe that every Canadian could imagine a Canada in which every person will live with dignity, value, and a shared purpose. But to do that, there must be a reflection of our shared history and the harmful events that continue to haunt us.
Come and explore the progress, or lack of progress that we are making in our current undertakings with this important issue.
- Jan. 14 – The program will lead off with some words from Chief Jayson Henry, of the Kettle & Stony Point First Nation, followed by Elizabeth Stevens who will talk about preserving indigenous languages.
- Jan. 21 – Bill Henderson and Bonnie Reynolds will discuss native spirituality. Bill is an artist and has studied Native cultural and spiritual traditions for the past 40 years. Bonnie is engaged in spiritual healing workshops for women and youth.
- Jan. 28 – Tom Patterson is a Deacon of St. James Anglican Church in Stratford and will describe his commitment to helping non-Indigenous people seek truth and reconciliation, and why it is important to build new relationships between our communities.
- Feb. 4 – Jeffrey George (a.k.a. Red Dog) a well known local artist will talk about his personal journey: Living through abuse and restoring ones self-worth as a native person, overcoming challenges, facing fears and following a dream with the wisdom of his elders.
- Feb. 11 – Jorden George is a Research Consultant, and a Member of the Kettle and Stony Point Community. He will speak about First Nations Treaties and Reconciliations, as well as Restorative Justice. He will also address the history of his People.
Partners In Learning Changes and Grows
Partners In Learning, a non-profit group in Grand Bend, opened its doors in 2005 to answer the need for stimulating, casual-learning courses for mature adults. There is good evidence to show that life-long learning not only increases one’s knowledge but also the ability to use that knowledge in meaningful ways. Doing so in the friendly social setting of Partners In Learning, makes for a very enjoyable activity. We aim to provide peer learning in a relaxed setting, diversity in interests and learning styles, meaningful topics, discussion and practice courses, forums for current events, weekly meetings, and field trips. All this is on offer as we begin our fourteenth season in a brand new location. We now meet at Huron Shores United Church, a stunning, fully equipped, and newly renovated space on Main St. in Grand Bend. It is an inspiring environment and we look forward to working with the Huron Shores community as we begin fall courses.
In addition to traditional listening/discussion courses, Partners In Learning launches two new initiatives this year. First, we know not everyone is comfortable with the “work alone” format normally used in planning and presenting a talk. And yet, all of us have wonderful stories to tell, topics we’d love to know more about, and friends who yearn to hear them! Our answer to this dilemma is the new PIL Co-operative Forum where members work in small groups with a friendly guide to find their preferred way of gathering information, putting together a talk, and sharing it. As well, we have another practical course, Finding Better Balance, coming up in the new year. It provides a relaxing movement experience especially designed for retirees who wish to prevent falls and move more comfortably overall.
Partners In Learning Open House is on September 10th from 12noon – 2:00pm at Huron Shores United Church. Moderators for courses will be on hand to talk about their courses and registration begins. Light lunch is provided. Fall courses start September 17th and include PIL Co-operative, The Many Faces of Religion, Accomplished Canadian Women and It Was Better When. Socrates Café, a forum for discussion of current events, is on the 4th Tuesday of each month.
Please join us for many exciting new adventures!

Open House to kick off the 2018-19 season
Time: 12 Noon
Location: Huron Shores United Church, 25 Main St., Grand Bend
Notes: Open to all. Come and learn about Partners and meet members who would like to welcome you to a unique experience in Grand Bend.
Partners has changed our venue!
Partners in Learning has enjoyed many successful years at PineDale Motor Inn. Thank you Mary Jo for your gracious hospitality and support.
The Huron Shores United Church has recently undergone major renovations to create a community hub, that is ideally suited to our type of organization. Therefore we decided to relocate to the church.
This move is not without some nostalgia for PineDale, where we have been since our inception and held hundreds of interesting and stimulating sessions. We look forward to serving our life-long-learners in the new location.
Please consider Partners in Learning to keep your mind sharp and enjoy interacting with other area residents who have similar interests.
The new location can be accessed from Queen’s Ave. Enter the double doors, go upstairs, turn left and enter the Sanctuary. Nancy is standing in front of the entrance.
